Caravaggio, Medusa, 1597.                Baroque artist Caravaggio pioneered the technique of chiaroscuro, which emphasized dramatic light and shadow. His paintings were often grotesque and shocking.

Time Periods

The Renaissance lasted from about 1300 to1700. The Baroque Period followed (with some overlap), 1600-1750.

Both movements began in Italy and spread across Europe.
