Time Periods

The Renaissance lasted from about 1300 to1700. The Baroque Period followed (with some overlap), 1600-1750.

Both movements began in Italy and spread across Europe.

Caravaggio, Medusa, 1597.   Baroque artist Caravaggio pioneered the technique of chiaroscuro,  emphasizing dramatic light and shadow. His paintings were often grotesque.
