Heartman Manuscripts of Slavery Collection at Xavier University consists of over 6000 pieces dating from 1724 to 1897, and relate directly to the social, economic, civil, and legal status of enslaved African Americans and Free People of Color in Louisiana an especially in New Orleans. The manuscripts are written in French, Spanish, and English.

The Southwestern Christian Advocate was a newspaper distributed to ministers, post offices, and subscribers in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Arkansas. From 1877-1910 the paper featured the "Lost Friends" column which contained messages from freedpeople who were searching for family members they became separated from while still slaves.
