It helps researchers & institutions quickly understand complex topics by providing instant, intuitive & fully referenced summaries. It utilizes both keyword & vector search techniques (for semantic meaning) to optimize responses to highly specific or complex queries. It also helps with language translation and can break down complex questions into more manageable components. Has deep integration with Microsoft 365 apps (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.), but is less versatile for general knowledge than ChatGPT and can do fewer creative tasks than GPT.

  • Perplexity AI: Searches the web using the Bing search engine. Perplexity finds information quickly, concisely, and summarizes it with internet source citations, helping explore topics effectively. Perplexity is generally considered more dependable for factual queries than ChatGPT, but is less versatile than ChatGPT. Perplexity can provide concise, detailed answers with web citations to complex questions, while Copilot offers more general information. Perplexity is good for surface-level understanding, while Gemini's Deep Research feature is better for in-depth analysis and comprehensive reports.

  • Notebook LM: While Perplexity is web-based, Notebook is document-focused research. Notebook is a feature within Microsoft Copilot. Copilot is a broader AI assistant, while Notebook is a specific interface within Copilot specifically designed to work with specific texts and long documents, like book-length manuscripts, for analysis and data extraction. for advanced research:

  • Scopus AI: Scopus is an abstract & citation database. It provides features like topic summaries, citation analysis, & expert recommendations.

  • Litmaps: Focuses on creating visual maps of citations to help users discover related research. Helps visualize & organize academic literature by mapping the connections between articles through citations & references. It uses the citation network, where articles are connected if they cite each other. It visually represents this network, allowing users to see how different papers relate to each other. Unlike ResearchRabbit, the positions on Litmaps are not random; the axes correspond to the publication date and citation count, respectively. This pushes relevant papers to the top right of the graph (i.e. recent, and with many citations). Moreover, ResearchRabbit can be overwhelming since it finds 1000s of papers, while Litmaps gives you the most relevant ones 10 at a time. By using a starting article, Litmaps can find related literature by identifying the articles that are most connected. It can automatically generate alerts for new relevant papers. Finds a broader range of articles than traditional keyword searches. It helps researchers organize their literature by creating & managing literature maps. Allows users to share their literature maps with others. Free Litmaps offers basic research with up to 20 inputs, for a visualization of 2 Litmaps with 100 articles on a map per month. Litmaps Pro is $8 per month and provides unlimited Litmaps with unlimited articles with unlimited inputs.

  • ResearchRabbit: Finds a lot of papers (1000s), and it does so surprisingly fast. If you want to exhaustively look through literature and quickly grasp the importance of a paper from its title and a glance at the abstract, ResearchRabbit serves you well. This comes at the cost of a slightly messy and overwhelming interface. One of the best features is the search for authors, which allows you to explore a field in more depth, by following its most important scholars. ResearchRabbit works well with Zotero, a free, open-source reference management software that helps users collect, organize, cite, and share research sources. It allows you to save citations from various sources like online articles, books, websites, and more, and then organize them into collections for different projects. Zotero also integrates with word processors like Microsoft Word, Google Docs, and LibreOffice to easily insert citations and generate bibliographies. ResearchRabbit is free, while Litmaps is subscription-based.

  • Connected Papers: similar to Litmaps but with simple user interface, designed for quick exploration, a more limited data source (primarily Semantic Scholar), and doesn't allow iterative refinement of maps (adding or deleting). Connected papers offers a free plan with 5 graphs per month and 2 paid plans. The Academic plan costs $6 per month (billed annually) for unlimited graphs and features for academics, non-profits, and personal use. The Business plan costs $20 per month (also billed annually) and provides unlimited graphs and features for business and industry. All plans include features like similarity graphs, prior and derivative works, multi-origin graphs, saved papers and graph history.

  • Inciteful.xyz:  similar to Litmaps; online tool for researchers to explore academic literature through citations; identifies the most influential researcher in their field. Free.

  • Keenious: unlike Litmaps, which focuses on citation networks, Keenious analyzes the text of a document to recommend similar articles. It provides recommendations based on the content of the text, rather than just keywords. Allows users to highlight specific sections of a document and get tailored research recommendations for those highlighted areas. Suggests related topics and filters recommendations based on those topics. Offers advanced filtering options to narrow down recommendations based on publication date, citation count, and other criteria. Allows users to analyze their drafts and get research recommendations directly within their writing content. Keenious offers both a free and a paid version. The free version has limitations on document length and the number of results it provides. The paid version, Keenious Plus, costs $20 per month and offers full access.
