Primary Sources on the Web

Be careful when using websites to find primary sources. Many sites on the Internet will host both primary and secondary sources.

Before using a document that you find online, know whether it is a primary or secondary source. If you have questions about whether a specific source is primary or secondary, please ask a librarian or your instructor.

During the French Revolution (20 June 1789), commoners and lesser members of the clergy (the Third Estate) were ordered to disband by King Louis VIV.  They refused to do so until a new French Constitution had been adopted, and declared themselves the National Assembly.
