Alaska

Alaska is the largest state in the U.S. It was purchased in 1867 for 7.2 million dollars, about two cents an acre.

Kayla focuses on Sam, a young boy living in the 1920s who still can't accept the eight-year-old disappearance, and apparent death, of his explorer father.  One day, in the snowy wilderness, he encounters a wolf who looks exactly like the dog that led his dad's sled. Despite the hostility of the townspeople, Sam bonds with this dog, Kayla, who teaches him about love and loyalty.

Martin Luther King Day: January 20

King was slain by a gunman standing on the balcony of Room 306 of the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee.  Samuel Kyles (now deceased) stood a few feet from King in his last few moments.

On Bloody Sunday, March 7, 1965, about 600 civil rights marchers were attacked by police with clubs and tear gas on a bridge outside Selma, Alabama. Two days later, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., led a symbolic march to the bridge.  The marchers sought equal voting rights for nonwhites, who made up 30 percent of the Alabama population, but less than 1 percent of registered voters.  Five months after the Selma events, President Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act of 1965.  Movie scene from 2014 movie Selma
